When my wife, Sarah, first learned that her play had been chosen for a reading at the 2012 Women Playwrights International Convention in Stockholm, we knew we had our answer to an important newlywed question: "Where do we want to honeymoon?"
For me, the choice was also perfect for personal reasons. As a child, I was enthralled by my mother's tales of the time she had lived there after World War II, working as a nanny and skiing in the far north with a cousin of famed Norwegian adventurer Thor Heyerdahl. And I had another fascination; ever since I had first read about the Vasa as a boy, I had imagined seeing this ill-fated, 17th-century warship in person. It also helped that Stockholm, Scandinavia's largest city at a million residents, enjoys a reputation as a cultural destination, with its summer Culture Festival and the city's 84 museums—more than enough to keep culture and history buffs like us happy.
