Okay. There were no crowds. The only photographer was the kid with a digital camera trying to get me to buy a photo of my Walter Mitty moment. But, hey! it was a heck of a ride, and you can always dream, especially in Lake Placid.
The site of two Olympic winter games (1932 and 1980), this isolated upstate New York village has never really extinguished its Olympic torch, hence the boast that it has more winter sporting attractions than any U.S. resort. Several athletic groups, including the U.S. Luge Association and the U.S. Canoe and Kayak Team, are headquartered here, and the former Olympic facilities are in use almost continuously for state, national, and international competitions and pre-Olympic trials.
