The Two Sides of Athens |

Our first visit to Athens was a post-cruise stop of just over a day—barely enough time to climb the Acropolis and get my fill of souvlaki, the tasty Greek sandwich of slow-cooked meat and vegetables. So this past April, again at the tail end of a cruise, my wife, Jenn, and I decided to take a few days to really get to know the city.
Jenn had fallen in love with Athens on our first trip a few years ago. I'm still trying to uncover the root of her love affair. She's not the history buff that I am, although she certainly enjoys exploring the ruins. And she'll readily admit that bustling, chaotic Athens can't compare to the beauty of Paris or Florence. Still, Athens ranks tops on her list. She can't really even explain it. If pressed, she'll just say that she loves the ancient city's "vibe."
