Nevis: Queen of the Caribbees
By air or by sea, you won?t soon forget your first sight of Nevis. Its volcanic
centerpiece, rising almost 3,300 feet above the cobalt Caribbean and
usually shrouded in a swirling wreath of clouds, is particularly dramatic
when backlit by sunrise or sunset—mystical and alluring.
Charlestown, its diminutive capital, is what the Caribbean was like 30 or
more years ago. The charming main street is lined with old buildings of
traditional character: full balconies and gingerbread trim, though many
seem to need paint. The town?s red roofs contrast against the verdant fields
and palm forests ascending the gentle foothills of the mountain. But Nevis
has little in the way of man-made attractions, aside from plentiful and
mostly informal dining.
