Nassau seems to be on the comeback. When we visited at the start of the low
season, the island was still almost fully booked. On the whole, we were favorably impressed with Nassau, though it's still too hectic for our taste, and the welcome is not as consistently friendly as on the
Out Islands. However, if you enjoy combining your sun and sports with
shopping, gambling, and nightlife, Nassau is a convenient and fun escape.
On our recent visit, Nassau looked quite spiffy and
apparently has seen a lot of investment in recent years. Most notable is the
development of the Atlantis Hotel complex on Paradise Island by Sun
International, with its modern, sparkling casino. The piece de resistance of
this super resort is a huge, aquarium/garden complex featuring all manner of
sea life in a river of saltwater tanks flowing through man-made boulders,
waterfalls, and lush tropical gardens. The sea life can be viewed from
meandering pathways, suspended rope bridges, or at eye level through huge,
plate-glass windows.
We checked out quite a number of accommodations while there, and from them
we chose three unique properties as Hideaways Great Escapes. Each offers
something different in terms of setting, style, and accommodations—one
of them is sure to be a perfect fit to your vacation preferences.
