Diamond Cove is a perfect getaway for families, friendly reunions, and even executive retreats. It is both far from the crowds and easy to get to. And it provides most of the support services you would expect of a resort hotel.
The island's season runs from May 1 to Oct. 31; July through Labor Day is considered high season. From Portland's International Jetport, taxis will take you to the Casco Bay Lines ferry terminal in downtown Portland. If you're driving, parking is available adjacent to the terminal. Ferry rides cost $7 (1999) each way (though I'm told that the fare is not always collected on the return trip). The ferry runs six to eight times a day.
The community's amenities include five swimming beaches (brrrrremember, this is Maine!), one with adjacent bar/grill, baths, and chaises. There is also swimming in a heated pool surrounded by ample terraces and comfortable chaises at one end of the central parade grounds. A tennis court is tucked off in the woods.
The administration building houses conference facilities for up to 50, a screening room with large TV, and a lounge/breakout room with a fireplace. Residents and guests have use of a lending/exchange library with a reasonable choice of books, and a medium-sized exercise room with rowing equipment, bicycles, steps, a universal machine, and free weights.
