Arizona Inn, Tucson
This historic landmark glows with a warm, historic patina. Most of the 86 casita rooms, housed in pink pueblo-style buildings, are spacious and have their own sheltered terraces and fireplaces. Baths are small and a bit dated, and furniture and carpets could use refurbishment. Amenities include a moderate-size heated pool, clay tennis courts, and an exercise facility. We found the service very attentive.

L'Auberge de Sedona, Sedona
L'Auberge looks like a New England North Woods lodge. Its 32 log cottages, main lodge, and restaurants lie on the banks of Oak Creek in a verdant glen. Each room is romanticallly decorated with flowery curtains and spreads and a canopied wrought-iron bed, and has a fireplace and private porch with a garden or creek view. We were told a needed face lift is planned within the year. We had a so-so dining experience at L'Auberge's acclaimed restaurant but a delightful breakfast at the Terrace restaurant on a deck on the edge of Oak Creek.
