Escape to Spice Island
Grenada is quiet, colorful, and genuine—a place where the flavors
of the Caribbean are still pure and uncomplicated. Many names on the
island attest to the its dominance in the international nutmeg market;
fully one-quarter of the world?s supply is grown here. And its history is
evident in the remnants of British and French fortifications and abandoned
sugar mills-turned-restaurants.
There?s plenty to explore on this island, known for its unspoiled, "old
Caribbean" flavor. Be sure to visit the lush plantations in the heart of
the island and the spice factories where nutmeg is transformed from a
nut off the tree to a tasty sprinkle for a rum punch or cappuccino. There?s
a rum distillery to tour; national forests, reserves, and a rain forest to
explore; Grand Etang, the island?s extinct volcano, to admire; and local
cricket matches to watch.
