Under the Watchful Gaze of the Great Pyramids |

Having just fought Cairo traffic for an hour, my husband and I felt a wonderful
sense of peace as we pulled up in front of the palatial Mena House Oberoi, with
its fragrant gardens and dazzling architecture. Lying literally in the shadow
of the Great Pyramids of Giza, the hotel is a welcome oasis of sights and scents
on the edge of this hectic city of 16 million people. The original structure
was built in 1869 as a royal lodge for vice-king Khedive Ismail, who stayed here
when hunting in the desert or visiting the pyramids. Today it is owned by Oberoi,
a well-known luxury hotel chain operating out of India.Summer 2005
