These may not always fit the profile for lodgings in The Hideaways Collection^®, but they certainly are worth knowing about, and we think you'll enjoy the insight.

. . . Drive about 160 miles southeast from Seattle as we did, and enter another world. No traffic, no noise, just wide-open vistas of rolling hills and a river cutting through basalt cliffs. Snake your way along a paved country road, passing orchards and vineyards, and there, with its unique structures bending toward the mighty Columbia River, is the wonderful Cave B Inn. We've known the owners, Carol and Vince Bryan, for years. Vince is a neurosurgeon from Seattle, and he and Carol came to the Columbia Basin of Washington in the 1980s to plant vineyards and establish a winery. Their original label was Champs d'Brionne—later changed to Cave B. The Inn is an absolute treat, snugged in among the vineyards and surrounded by high-desert sagebrush and those magnificent cliffs (sunsets here can be spectacular). We've stayed in both the Cliffehouses—spacious and well-equipped stand-alone units with great views—and the Desert Yurts (with two of our grandsons), memorable and fun accommodations in a more rustic setting. The croaking frogs made getting to sleep a little difficult, but they were a pleasant reminder that we were in the middle of nature.
