Our winter visit to Paris didn't get off to an auspicious start. Our red-eye flight had the usual insomnious ingredients--crying baby, sneezing neighbors. The cabin thermostat being set to "hammam" didn't help much either. The train ride in from Charles de Gaulle airport was punctuated by me getting pinned between the automated exit doors at Gare du Nord station after my wife, Jenn, took a bit too long getting her suitcase through in front of me. Were it not for a nice Parisian woman with a Metro card, I might still be flailing today. Street-side, we were greeted by 42 degrees and a light drizzle--fairly typical for December, I suppose. And when we finally made it to the hotel, our room was not available for early check-in.
Exhausted, we made our way to the Louvre to idle away some time indoors--only to find it had just closed over what promised to be a protracted wildcat strike by the city's museum workers. We settled for an 8 euro cappuccino at a nearby cafe.March 2010
