Small group excursions into the backcountry
This 24-plus-year veteran expedition leader attracts vacationers eager to experience—not merely observe—Alaska's raw natural beauty. From June to September, Alaska
Wildland Adventures runs wilderness "safaris," including tours tailored to
families, into remote regions usually not accessible by cruise and bus tour vacationers.
AWA's Denalie Backcountry Lodge (one of three) is located almost 10 miles into
the vast Denali National Park. From these comfortable bases, AWA leads groups
of 6 to 10 in hiking, kayaking, rafting, mountain biking.
DETAILS: 4-to 9-day wilderness tours; accommodations in cabins/cabin tents, with
heat, hot water; most have private baths. Buffet and family-style meals. All-inclusive
rates, from $1895 to $4895 per person (2001). Also available: sportfishing packages and
independent stays at AWA lodges.
