From the moment I first saw the Carl Gustaf many years ago, I knew life would not be complete until I settled into a thickly padded chaise on one of its romantic, foliage-sheltered terraces and meditated on the view of Gustavia Harborsurely one of the Caribbean's most picturesque.
I had inspected this hillside hotel in tony Gustavia, St. Barth's capital, on one visit, and on another, spent hours photographing the Gustaf's dramatic features and view. In fact, one of those photos was selected for the cover of both the Fall/Winter 1997/1998 Hideaways Guide and 1998 Hideaways Calendar. But until our recent visit to St. Barth, I had never actually experienced a stay in this intimate hideaway that we had been recommending to members for years.
Unlike many of life's much-anticipated events, our stay at the Carl Gustaf actually lived up to my expectations.
An island hot spot
As tiny as the Carl Gustaf isjust 14 suitesit's definitely a happening place. A gourmet menu and the stunning sunsets over the harbor attract islanders and St. Barth visitors to the chic poolside restaurant/lounge. The evening menu features French cuisine; lunch, a West Indian flair.
