When we asked Amanda Syrowatka of the elegant Viceroy BaliTHC in Ubud to share five
reasons avid travelers should visit Bali, she bowled us over with her excellent suggestions. Some of these are specific to the Ubud area, which is
considered the cultural center of Bali. But many are adventures and experiences you can have throughout Bali's most popular tourism regions. Here are
Amanda's myriad suggestions for immersing yourself in this exotic destination.
1. Explore the Culture
According to Amanda, the most engaging aspect of travel to Bali is the island's culture and the beauty of the Balinese people. There's no end to the unique
experiences that showcase Bali's history and culture, from visiting Hindu temples to shopping at local food markets and attending an authentic Balinese
blessing ceremony.
Hindu Temples:
Amanda recommends visiting Pura Besakih, the largest and holiest temple complex in Bali, built up six terraced levels on the slopes of
Mount Agung in eastern Bali; Tanah Lot, a shrine built on a large outcropping of offshore rock that is said to be guarded from evil spirits by venomous sea
snakes; Taman Ayun, a Royal Temple of the Mengwi Empire with multistoried rooftops; and Pura Ulun Danu Bratan, a major water temple for offerings to the
water goddess Dewi Danu, built on the shores of Lake Bratan in the mountains near Bedugul.
