A 100-mile detour to verify the color of the sand? Why not?
We were on a spur-of-the-moment Christmas jaunt to the Bahamas, achieved in
spite of sold-out flights, fully booked resorts, and no familiarity with that
part of the world. Nothing was implausible. We had all we needed—a private
plane, the Bahamas and Caribbean Pilot's Guide, and a que sera sense of
adventure.
It was "wheels up" for us and our husbands, Bill and Tim, midday
on December 24. The first leg of the adventure—Fort Lauderdale to Walker's
Cay—would take about an hour. Tim's Cessna Caravan comfortably carried us
for our self-prescribed antidote to the holiday frenzy. Seven lazy days later,
we returned, fully restored by the curative power of the sun, sand, and
gin-clear waters. We had hopped around eight islands at the height of Junkanoo,
carnival time in the laid-back Out Islands. What a way to go!
