Hideaways' Review
Look for the signature green pyramid-shaped dome atop this landmark hotel, rising high above the shores of Lake Michigan, with the city that is the birthplace of the steel-frame skyscraper at its heels. This towering monument to hospitality—refined, relevant, multicultural, and chic—represents all that is good about Chicago today. Although it's situated on a quiet stretch of shorefront, Fairmont Chicago is mere steps from the essentials of downtown life: Grant Park and the new 24.5-acre Millennium Park with its Frank Gehry-designed Jay Pritzker Pavilion, Chicago's theaters and nightclubs, The Art Institute, Navy Pier, dining, and shopping along the Magnificent Mile and Oak Street's many boutiques.
Not that you'll feel compelled to venture out. Despite its size, Fairmont Chicago manages to deliver a small-hotel experience. Oversized, beautifully appointed guest rooms, plush linens, pillow-top beds, and personalized, attentive service come standard. The trendy Aria restaurant, which just celebrated its fifth anniversary, continues to take "fusion" to new depths with global representations of "comfort food" such as truffled lobster risotto and Argentinean churrasco. Less structured is the red-hot Aria Bar, where you can lose yourself in a private banquette, or dine on the freshest of sushi flown in daily from Japan. And in a nod to the current era of self-indulgence, the hotel just opened mySpa, an 11,000-square-foot luxury spa and fitness studio where you can personalize not only your treatments, but also—by way of your personal iPod—your own music. |
