When wealthy New England shipbuilder Nathaniel Lord turned his attention to building his Federal-style home during the War of 1812, he spared no expense, playing out his dream along Maine's rocky southern coastline. As a 21st-century guest of the Captain Lord Mansion, you'll benefit from his vision of a comfortable, welcoming place to retreat from the stress of daily business, while walking in the Captain's footsteps through manicured gardens, cozying up before a warming fire, and just generally reliving the pleasantries of a simpler era. This bed & breakfast inn is a lovingly restored landmark in a quiet residential neighborhood, a Colonial work of art where each of 20 guest rooms and suites—both in the Mansion and in the adjoining Garden House—is exquisitely detailed and meant to be savored. In fact, delightful embellishments are the inn's hallmark, from custom-made drapes with coordinating dust ruffles to clever original art, antique four-poster beds, and the finest down comforters and pillows. On chilly evenings, the gas fireplace and heated marble bathroom floor—so inviting after stepping from your deep whirlpool tub—will have you debating whether to leave your room at all.
