Hideaways' Review
One can easily imagine making the Left Bank's quietly elegant Hotel Montalembert their home away from home. Here, it's the little things that have guests returning again and again: the dramatic sprays of fresh flowers that adorn public areas; the refreshingly professional and efficient, yet friendly, staff; and the Molton Brown toiletries that accompany the handsomely designed bathrooms. Trendy, yet comfortingly cozy, Montalembert is the rare establishment where you can dine next to French writers and journalists one minute, and enjoy a sublime cup of tea curled up by the library fireplace the next. And though it's set in a quiet backwater just off the fashionable dining, gallery, and shopping district of Boulevard St. Germaine, the hotel is just steps away from sidewalk cafés, the Metro, the Seine, and such popular cultural attractions as the Musee d'Orsay, Musee Rodin, and the Louvre.
A historic landmark, the hotel underwent extensive renovations in 1990 and again in 2005; both successfully integrated modern touches with the original Beaux Arts architecture. Most guest rooms are quiet and understated by Parisian standards, while the eighth-floor suites are especially prized for their mansard windows and Eiffel Tower views. Frette linens decorate roomy beds topped with plush taupe- and tobacco-striped duvets. Lavish bathrooms are finished with deep tubs, Cascais marble, and tall pivoting mirrors. Flat-screen TVs, Bose® iPod docks, wifi Internet, and Nespresso machines are all standard appointments. And the Montalembert's restaurant, with its photos of '50s film stars, has become a popular neighborhood haunt, dishing out seriously comforting food that, like the hotel, is a transcendent mix of the modern and the classic. |
