Hideaways' Review
There are hotels at which to stay and play in Aspen, and then there is the Hotel Jerome. Set on Aspen's Main Street, with stunning views of—and complimentary SUV service to—Aspen Mountain, this ever-popular hostelry is a celebrated, elegant alternative to the usual ski or summer adventure lodging. Dating to 1889 and most recently refurbished in 2002, it provides the town with a colorful "Silver Rush" authenticity that others can merely imitate. The hotel's founder (a partner in New York's original Macy's Department Store) desired to bring European refinements to the rambunctious mining town, and his Victorian antiques, elaborately carved woodwork, stamped-metal friezes, and pressed-tin ceilings all have been painstakingly restored.
Return from a day of skiing at Aspen, Aspen Highlands, Buttermilk, or Snowmass to enjoy a "J-rita" specialty marguerita by the fire, or skillfully prepared, locally purveyed meats, game, fowl, and trout in the sumptuously appointed Century Room. Come summer, a day spent celebrating Aspen's boundless natural and cultural attractions (how about a classical or bluegrass music concert in an alpine meadow?) can continue with a dip in the heated courtyard pool followed by an al fresco dinner on the Garden Terrace. Many rooms and the outdoor areas grant sweeping views of Aspen Mountain and its environs. Ultra-comfortable, extra-large guest rooms feature rich damask fabrics, king-size beds, down comforters, feather pillows, and 300-thread-count linens. Bathrooms, finished with white Carrara marble and reproduction 19th-century octagonal tiles, boast oversize tubs and separate showers. And while the original Hotel Jerome was built to impose cosmopolitan civility on a once-raucous mining town, it now lends an air of Old-World sophistication and charm to this chic playground. |
