Known as the Sleeping Giant, Andros Island is one of those rare Caribbean gems that is still largely unexplored and sparsely populated. And there, just off its coast, is another, even better kept secret—Kamalame Cay. This unspoiled and very small private island is one you might dream of being cast away on—three uninterrupted miles of talcum-soft white sand, a fringe of palm trees, gorgeous gin-clear waters, and hardly a soul in sight. But thankfully, you needn’t live the Spartan life of a castaway here, because you’ll have access to all the pleasures of a very personal, all-inclusive resort at your fingertips.
Between the resort’s airy and eclectic beachfront cottage suites and its sumptuous and spacious villa suites—with lofted ceilings and French doors opening to sun-swept verandas—you’re sure to find the perfect island nesting place. Then there’s ultra-luxurious Kamalame Cove, a sprawling plantation-style home on its own tiny four-acre atoll.
If fishing is in your blood, Kamalame Cay is the bait. This is the bone-fishing capital of the world; you can wade the crystalline flats on your own, or hire a skiff and an expert guide. Another option? Head to the open sea in a chase for coveted marlin, wahoo, and dolphin. Non-fishermen take note: there’s plenty to keep you busy, like tennis, scuba diving, snorkeling, sea kayaking, and beachcombing for seashells or that perfect, secluded stretch of sand. In the evenings, drift over to the Great House, filled with art and antiques, where guests gather for convivial cocktails and exquisite, relaxed dining on the wrap-around veranda.
Kamalame opened the Bahamas first over-water spa. The 2,000-square-foot spa is in a two-story facility at the end of the 200-foot-long pier. Its five treatment rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows that open to views and the sound of the water below. So, after a day of fighting trophy fish or just lazing around this 96-acre private island off Andros in the Bahamas, you can relax even more and forget all your worldly cares as you drift off with a gentle massage or invigorating body wrap.
