Visitandine nuns once roamed the vaulted corridors and tended the gardens of this former convent; today, visitors can avail themselves of the intrinsic peace and tranquility offered by its hallowed halls. Set in the heart of Maratea, an ancient seafaring town in Italy's Basilicata region, La Locanda occupies the perfect vantage point from which to explore the dual identities of the region: rugged mountainous terrain stretching down to a lively port, and the pleasures of a glistening sea.
With rooms and suites staggered throughout multiple levels, La Locanda promotes a coveted sense of privacy and intimacy, right down to the swimming pool and sun terrace that overlook the red-roofed town. Each of the bright, minimally adorned suites (think pared-down nuns' cells) centers around a canopied king-size bed and town or mountain views. Some have private gardens, others interesting second levels, and one, "La Vicaria," spotlights a large bathtub actually carved into the mountain rock. In the evening, relax with cocktails and local wines in the stone-walled Bar L'Alambicco, or enjoy some of the finest regionally inspired cuisine on the entire coast at Il Sacello Restaurant.
While much has changed since the steepled edifice housed its sisters, La Locanda's ambiance still reflects loving care and devotion. From enthusiastic bell boys to the warm and attentive maitre d'hotel (he'll seem to know what you want even before you do), the welcoming and down-to-earth staff will make you glad you came. |
