Mexico's Riviera Nayarit: Simmering Slowly but Smartly |

Having followed Mexico's tourism development since the mid-1970s, I always expect resort areas there to sprout quickly, like mushrooms after a good rainstorm. Look at Cancun, Cabo, Ixtapa, the Riviera Maya. They just exploded from mere fishing villages, or, in the case of Cancun and most of the Riviera Maya, from nothingness and jungle. So when I heard that the Mexican tourism powers-that-be were now targeting a section of the Pacific Coast just north of Puerto Vallarta for their next big push, my first thought was, "What's there, and why has it taken so long to move to the forefront?"
The question was particularly relevant as the Riviera Nayarit (pronounced Nah-yah-REET), as it is now being dubbed, lies immediately north of Puerto Vallarta, one of Mexico's oldest and most popular resort areas, and has good air access. So this past November we made a foray to investigate.
