Few shipboard crew members juggle as many balls as the cruise director, who is expected to greet guests, coordinate all on-board entertainment and activities, be adept at conversation, and smooth any ruffled feathers in a most diplomatic way. We caught up with Silversea Cruises' Fernando Barroso de Oliveira, a native of Portugal, as he was rounding Cape Horn and heading up the coast of Chile on a 126-day World Cruise aboard the Silver Shadow--her first such voyage to completely circle the globe.
