Hiding Away in Nevis
By Mike Thiel

I can think of no better way to experience Nevis—and the Caribbean of yesteryear—than by staying at one of the island's historic plantation inns. After inspecting all of them, we think the only problem you'll have is choosing among them; each has a unique style, setting, and attractions.

Located around Gingerland on the lush, south- and east-facing sides of the mountain, most plantations—except for the beachfront Nisbet—were built about a thousand feet above sea level to catch the cooling trade breezes. The views, of course, are panoramic. This guide should help you choose the perfect setting for your escape to the "Queen of the Caribbees." Call Hideaways Travel Services for more information and to book your Nevis Shangri-La. Note: Rates do not include tax and service.

The Hermitage

We judged The Hermitage's blend of accommodations, antique furnishings, and homey style the most authentic of Nevis' five plantattion inns. The hillside Hermitage, about 800 feet above sea level, is reminiscent of an Irish estate plunked in the luxuriant Caribbean. Stone walls surround the stables and cottages; terraced lawns and tropical gardens add color. The plantation was reclaimed from the jungle in 1985 by Richard and Maureen Lupinacci, who have added to it slowly, creating an excellent reputation along the way. Several of the plantation's red- and green-roofed cottages have been brought in from elsewhere on the island; others were built on site in native architecture. No two are alike, which adds to the charm. The cottages feature antiques and four-poster canopy beds, plus big porches with hammocks; "luxury" cottages have separate sitting rooms and kitchenettes. The imposing, three-bedroom Manor House, set apart from the cottages and with its own pool, is spacious and private; it's perfect for a large gathering of friends or family.
