A Reel Getaway

The Belize River Lodge would not appeal to every traveler, but it sure hooked an avid fisherman like me. Set on the banks of the Belize River, the Lodge's emphasis on fishing is evident in its numbers: eight bedrooms, eight boats, and eight fishing guides. Vacations here can be land-based or boat-based; in addition to flyfishing, the Lodge offers eco-tours.

Serious anglers can hop aboard one of the three offshore yachts for a week of fishing on out-of-the-way flats. The crewed (including guides) yachts act as motherships, towing skiffs. Two of the yachts—58' and 52'—accommodate four; all-inclusive rates start at $2,213/person (2000) for a five-day adventure. The other (a 40-footer) is suitable for a pair of anglers.

The one-story main lodge has a large, screened-in porch with honor bar (guests record their libations in a little notebook) and a workbench for fly-tying. Located in three buildings, the cottage-like rooms are on the small side, but warmly furnished with single beds and hardwood floors—even in the old-fashioned bathrooms. All-inclusive (meals, guides, gear, etc.) Lodge rates are $1,949/person (2000) for a five-day stay.

You won't find a beach or pool here, but you will find a well-organized fishing operation. My guided day trip on the river, aboard a 23-foot, Mexican-style panga skiff, rewarded me with wonderful jungle scenery, tropical birds, howler monkeys, and a tasty picnic.
