Hideaways' Review |
The story of Verdura begins with a passion . . . a passion for golf, for the Mediterranean culture, and for magnificent scenery. British hotelier Sir Rocco Forte combined his passion for all three into one stunning golf-and-spa-inspired resort on Sicily's sun-drenched southwest coast, just 40 minutes' drive from the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento. The Verdura name comes from the land's previous owner, the Duke of Verdura, who was famous for his beautiful jewelry designs during the golden age of Art Deco. No wonder, then, that Verdura Golf & Spa Resort is a gem of contemporary design itself, with sleek yet comfortable rooms and suites, design motifs based on antique Sicilian Maiolica tile, and a section of awe-inspiring Landscape Villas with uninterrupted sea views and outdoor living areas that rival their spectacular indoor counterparts.
Of course, golf is one of the main draws here, with three courses to choose from, all created with the help of California golf course architect Kyle Phillips. His take on the classic links style manifests itself in two challenging 18-hole championship layouts--The East Course and The West Course--as well as a nine-hole par-three that promises not to overwhelm the novice and junior golfer. Each hole sits within an amphitheater of rugged Sicilian mountains and sweeping Mediterranean views.
The flip side of the Verdura coin is its exquisite water-focused spa with a series of open-air thalassotherapy pools, some with massaging jets and one with soothing waterfalls. Tucked inside the spa are peaceful relaxation areas, a hammam, saunas, and an indoor lap pool. Try an invigorating Olive Seed Scrub to leave you refreshed and glowing before you step out for the evening, perhaps to dine at Zagara, which offers a candlelight setting and superb Mediterranean cuisine created by celebrity chef Fulvio Pierangelini. Down on the private beach, you'll find a more casual eatery, Amare, which serves the finest local produce and freshest catch-of-the-day. If you feel so inspired, you can even take a cooking class and master the delicious flavors of Sicilian cuisine--a fitting souvenir to take home as a remembrance of your stay.
