Hideaways' Review |
How whimsical, that this sleek, contemporary hotel should be bordered by a small forest of Dr.-Seuss-like umbrella pines--when perhaps the last thing
you'll need here on the sun-baked coast of Portugal is an umbrella! The Oitavos takes full advantage of these clear, crisp views from its enviable perch
above the Atlantic, with the Sintra Mountains behind and rolling, scrub-covered hills undulating around it. In the midst of this unique landscape rises a
stunning design hotel, all glass, steel, and clean lines that defy the soft greens, yellows, and purples of the surrounding vegetation. Inside, minimalist
public areas are punctuated by colorful paintings by Portuguese artists, and by handmade, organic lamps and light fixtures that look as if they, too,
walked off the pages of a Dr. Seuss book. Rooms and suites--142 total, and each with a private balcony--are studies in soft gray, cream, plum, and blue,
reflecting sunset shades over the Atlantic. And everywhere, that pure coastal light lifts the spirits as it floods in through floor-to-ceiling windows.
Tucked into the rolling hills adjacent to the hotel is the award-winning Oitavos Dunes golf course, a links-style Arthur Hills design created to be
unobtrusive and environmentally sensitive--so much so that it has been named Europe's first Audubon Gold Signature Sanctuary course. Not into golf? Wander
over to the spa for seawater therapies and organic treatments like the Sweet Lavender and Seaweed Sugar Glow. Relax by the heated saltwater pool, with its
ocean views, or join a yoga session on the open-air terrace. Finally, finish your day with Portuguese tapas and fresh seafood in the chic, cosmopolitan
Ipsylon Restaurant, or join the Chef's Table and sample a bespoke menu of Mediterranean specialties, accompanied by the region's finest wines. Then settle
in for that spectacular sunset show, cocktail in hand, and toast your good fortune and taste.
