Hideaways' Review |
Inspiration is a given in this magical countryside caught delicately in the balance between mountains and sea. Nestled among its hills is the delightful Mallorcan village of Deià and, perched just above that, the secluded and exclusive retreat of Belmond La Residencia. From its vantage point high above the Mediterranean, you'll have no trouble imagining why this former 16th-century manor house was so well suited for defense against marauding pirates; you'll also understand how equally alluring the area was to 19th-century painters, poets, and writers—including Englishman Robert Graves, who lived and wrote in this mountain village for 45 years.
Comprising four blush-colored buildings, Belmond La Residencia and its surrounding 30 acres of olive groves blend uncompromisingly with the semi-arid vegetation and rugged stone outcroppings that create a dramatic backdrop. Its 67 individually designed guest rooms and suites have cool stone and tile floors, shady terraces draped with flower-drenched vines, and louvered doors to capture breezes, all meant to provide respite from the strong Spanish sun. And at nightfall, as lights twinkle on in the village, a refreshing drink served poolside will restore your energy for a stylishly late dinner at El Olivo, Belmond La Residencia's award-winning gourmet restaurant with terrace views worthy of a sonnet. |
