Hideaways' Review |
There's a lot to live up to with a name like The Ambassadors' Palace. Built to host diplomats visiting nearby embassies, the Ambasciatori Palace is an elegant early-20th-century hotel situated halfway along Rome's pulsating city-center boulevard, Via Veneto. The Ambasciatori is perfectly positioned for exploring Rome's many historic sites, including the nearby Borghese Gardens with its national museum, opera, and zoo, as well as designer shops and outdoor cafés favored for soaking up the essence of Rome. Having undergone renovations as recently as 2003, the hotel was modernized while being carefully restored to its original period splendor.
Step off the winding, tree-lined Via Veneto into a lofty lobby crowned by Venetian chandeliers, Brazilian granite columns, mosaic flooring, and the intricate wrought-iron railings of a grand staircase. Head for the hotel's hub, The Ambassador bar, which comes alive each evening with the soft sounds of shaken cocktails and live piano music. Or watch life-as-Rome-knows-it pass by from a table at the al fresco La Terrazza restaurant, where you can choose from a refined menu of modern Italian/international cuisine and more than 1,000 wines, all served in a Beaux Arts setting dating back to the 1920s. Guest rooms and suites are a mix of contemporary amenities and old-fashioned charm, many with parquet floors, brocade fabrics, antique marble touches, and period furniture. Many of the updated bathrooms have large tubs, Jacuzzis®, and windows overlooking Via Veneto, Via Liguria, or the hotel's well-lit, secluded inner courtyard. Here, you'll experience Rome as the Romans know it: vivacious, modern, yet firmly entrenched in its glorious past. |
